Edgebander worktop and its extensive features
There's plenty of solutions for banding ABS edges in smaller woodshops. Some prefer to band edges at their laminate supplier, others band using traditional methods and some get an IGM Portable Edgebander. If you are still looking for the ideal portable edgebander or even if you have already bought one, we would like to offer you a couple of tips on how to fully utilize its features using the IGM Worktable for Portable Edgebanders.
The Worktable is designed to accommodate all the edgebanders we offer. Also, the table can be fitted with a PD80 Edgeband Trimmer. All fittings and parts fall into each other and form a perfect versatile tool.
The table legs have screw holes for proper affixing. So you can screw it into your worktop, workbench or a stand. You only need to remember the support leg that needs to be propped. Therefore you should arrange for more space on the right back corner of the worktop. The Worktable has a steel body, sheet metal worktop and metal legs.
The surface is fitted with plastic that protects your work. The plastic surface prevents any scratches or damage to your material.
Using the Worktable with a Portable Edgebander
As mentioned, the Worktable can be fitted with any Edgebander from our offer. Either the professional type DR500 or the trade BR300. Affixing the edgebander to the table is simple and quick using 3 screws and an Allen key. One of the biggest advantages of the table are the trimming pliers and tape holder that come delivered with the Worktable. Comfortably place the whole ABS wheel in the holder and pull the tape through the pliers onto the feed roller of the edgebander. After banding your workpiece, simply cut off the tape using the stationary pliers.
Now you don't have to unnecessarily measure your tape before banding. After banding and trimming the end of the tape, you simply turn the workpiece over and feed the tape onto the roller again and continue banding. It may be necessary to lift the workpiece by 2 mm over the worktop to start banding. The flat magnets with the plastic surface will help you lift the workpiece. These pads help you lift the workpiece and allow you to band precisely.
Banding with ABS using a Worktable and a Portable Edgebander has never been easier.
When finished, or when you need to band larger workpieces, simply unscrew and remove the machine and use it manually.
Using the Worktable for edge trimming
Even after banding all the edges, you still need to trim them with a trimmer. The PD80 Hand-held Trimmer is ideal for trimming ABS edges, its fitted with a bearing brake, simple and accurate height adjustment, router bit and a table extension that helps to trim the ABS edges.
The trimmer can be simply attached to the table using a base plate that is supplied with the worktable. In a minute the table has one more feature.
First a practical banding tool and in a minute it functions as a handy ABS trimmer. Insert the base plate instead of the edgebander. After fastening the plate, screw in the trimmer using three screws. After affixing the trimmer to the table, it may be difficult to turn it on and off, that is why the table is fitted with an extra switch and a plug for the trimmer. Therefore, you can control the trimmer by the switch on the side of the table.
When banding with ABS, its necessary to lift the workpiece by 2 mm to prevent the overlapping ABS edge getting caught up. The flat magnets help you to lift the workpiece, same as with banding with ABS. These pads help you lift the workpiece and prevent the overlapping edges getting caught up. This combination is ideal only for trimming the edge with an angle or rounding cutter.
After trimming and rounding the edge, you can finish any overlaps with a scraper (supplied with the trimmer).
Using the Worktable for edge trimming with an extension
You can extend the versatility of the Worktable by getting the Set for Straight workpieces ST97. This set includes a number of fences and pads that help you band straight pieces. It also includes a fence with a lifting mechanism for the PD80 Trimmer. Use screws to affix the straight fence with a lifting mechanism to the edge of the table and then fit it with the Trimmer using the holes in the mechanism.
This changes the trimming process, now, the mechanism lifts itself up when the workpiece encounters the cutter, so the bearing copies the surface of the laminate when trimming.
That way, the edge is precisely trimmed against the laminate.
The lifting mechanism helps with the horizontal travel of the router - into the ABS edge and away. The fence with the lifting mechanism is not suitable for curved pieces but is especially useful when working with straight ones. The whole extension streamlines ABS banding and can be only recommended.
