The Bench Plane is used for the initial processing of roughly cut boards and planks or as a follow-up after using a Scrub Plane.
The quality of the planed surface may be improved and smoothed out with a Jack Plane (shaping of softwoods) or with the Smoothing Plane (medium-hard and hardwoods).
The knife is placed under 45° to the planed surface, flipping the knife allows an angle increase to 75°. This "trick" is mainly used when planing very hardwoods.
